SAS ordered their first DC-6 Cloudmaster aircrafts in november 1946 (7 planes). Thoughts were that SAS should use Boeing 377 Stratocruisers in their trans-atlantic service, but Boeing were facing difficulties both delivering on time (1947), and fulfilling all SAS requirements. The order for the four B377 were transferred to BOAC.

Further orders of the Cloudmaster followed, making the total number to 17 aircrafts. The last four ordered aircrafts with intended registrations SE-BDG, SE-BDH, SE-BDI and SE-BDK were however transferred to BPCA - British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines.

The SAS DC-6 Cloudmasters became the stars of the fleet. They were taken into service in June 1948.

In Mars 1951 SAS ordered 6 aircrafts of the next model DC-6B, soon followed by an additional order of 8 aircrafts. The DC-6B was a bit longer, had better engines, had a higher maximum take-off weight and thus could take more passengers and more fuel. It became the new star of the fleet!

In 1952 when the first DC-6B aircrafts were delivered, the older DC-6 became "#2" and started to replace their predecessor DC-4. By 1959 the last DC-6 were taken out of service.
The DC-6B aircrafts were in service up until 1961 when new jet age took over!

The SAS plane was enroute from Stockholm to RAF Northolt, with an intermediate stop at Amsterdam.
On approach to RAF Northolt the crew decided to divert back to Amsterdam due to bad weather. When in a climb they collided with an Avro York operated by RAF also on its way to RAF Northolt. All onboard the two aircrafts were killed in the accident.

Onroute from Glasgow to Copenhagen.
Position: Over Orkney Islands.
Date: August 14 1949.
Time: 12:20.

What puzzles me a bit is the position "Orkney Island". To me it does not make sense when you fly from Glasgow to Copenhagen ...

August 14 is a Sunday, and on Sundays the SK 912 E with a DC-6 should arrive Copenhagen. There is no other possibility!
